To locate a far target accurately, you need both distance to the target and the direction to it. The M41A7 uses a laser range finder to measure the exact range to the target, and the PADS system to provide the bearing (and elevation) to that target. With the distance from the rangefinder and the direction data from PADS, the fire-control system can compute the target’s precise location and set up the aiming solution for the missile. The other options don’t supply this combination of precise range and orientation data: the traversing unit with the fire-control system handles aiming mechanics but not the necessary range information; the FLIR sight helps detect or image a target but doesn’t give a precise distance and bearing; a vehicle-mounted charger has no role in locating targets. Therefore, combining the laser range finder with PADS is the method that yields far target location.
